Sharing my life one blog post at a time

My Blogging Mojo

blogging-mojo

is BACK! Not sure what happened but it’s just back. I’m bursting with stories to tell and experiences to share.

I sort of went on a (personal) blogging slump sometime in late 2005 when MrG’s ex-wife stalked my old blog (no goss there. I’ve archived all her comments into a private folder in my computer and have since password-protected all the entries she’s commented on), I just lost interest in blogging much about our personal life.

And though I blogged intermittently over the next 3 years since 2005, it wasn’t the same. My heart wasn’t in it. I didn’t know what to share. While my pro blogging gigs flourished, my desire to blog at a personal level waned. When I lost my blogging mojo in 2005, my blog hopping activities took a nose dive too. It was also around that time when my day job got busier than it’s ever been.

So what was the turning point then?

Of Changes

me-31dec091

Happy new year to everyone! I can’t believe we’re almost a decade through the 21st century. 8 years has gone by like a blur. A couple of days ago, I was up till 2am (that’s what the holidays do to you. You’re up at crazy hours!) reading through my past entries in my old blog. Reading through my entries from 2004, I couldn’t believe the changes I’ve gone through. I had a great time through all your comments of how you wished us well for 2006 then 2007 then 2008 and now, 2009! Yaiks!

I was going to make a list of new year’s resolutions (not that I’ve done one in years!) but having visited Shai and Sinta‘s sites encouraged me to make a list of personal goals for this year instead of resolutions.

IMHO, resolutions are more behavioural in nature and harder to measure compared to goals which are easier to ‘interpret’ improvements and changes. For anything behavioural that I want to improve, I prefer to keep it in my private journal.

So, without further ado, here are my goals for the year which I am hoping are easy enough to achieve:

Our Busines…My Passion

I love this video. This sums up a part of the business I am in and why I am so passionate about it. I wish I could you our house reel but it’s proprietary. Not sure if it will ever be up on the Shannon’s Way website. We’ll see.

Shot with a mobile phone and found typography, this short film has just won New York’s Tropfest film festival.

You should watch it and tell me if it didn’t pierce your heart as mine was.

Happy watching!

We are officially opening!

Well, Shannon’s Way in New Zealand that is. While we’ve been operating since early July, our official lunch to the public is next week. The photo above is the front of the invitation we sent to invited guests. The invite opens from the middle (between the Asian Man on the left and the woman on the right) to reveal this:

It’s been a heck of ride from the time we presented our business plan to our partners/investors in Melbourne in June till this day. From that time till now, I can count in one hand the number of evenings (where the work day has ended) I had time off from ‘work’ whether it is working on existing projects, researching material for the business or simply thinking about the future from a business perspective.

For the launch, we have invited one of New Zealand’s most respected commentators, Rod Oram to present about the value of social marketing, a concept that is at the heart of Shannon’s Way’s value proposition.

My second home

My messy work station

This is where I live  more than half of my waking moments. We had the work stations especially customised to fit our office. I say ‘our’ because I share the Executive Office with my business partner, Chris. We are hoping to sub-lease the other half of our office space to help pay the office rent.

It’s not unusual here in New Zealand for small businesses to share office spaces. Not a lot of office buildings out there will give you space less than 100 sq. m. It’s too small hence the sub-leasing option.

Back to the topic. From 1 Sep, this has been my home from 8.30am to 5.00pm. Officially, we were meant to finish start the work day at 8.30am and end at 5.00pm but that NEVER happens. Too much to do and sometimes, I can’t be bothered to lug my laptop home. I sometimes start at 8.00am and work till about 9.30pm.

9.30pm is the latest I’ve been in, in this office since 1 Sep. I do get the hibby-jibbees when I know that I’m the only soul in this 5-floor building so I leave and if I need to carry on with my work, I do it in the comfort of my home.

I love our office.

I love my work station.

I love our Executive Office. While it is sometimes not good to share an office with someone, especially if that someone is so loud on the phone. I still love the office. Chris is “improving” on his ‘volume’ haha. He does respond to my occasional ‘sshhh’ when he’s too loud on the phone!

I love the view from my window.

I just. Love it.

How do you like it?

Part of starting up your own business (well, a business I co-own) is that you’re also responsible for every little bit, even getting a supplier to provide the frosting for your glass door and windows.

Here’s our newly frosted front door emblazoned with our company name.

Impressive, it was

Every year I get to don my evening frock, jazz up my hair and wear ‘heavier-than-usual’ make up. The reason? To attend the Canterbury Champion Awards Dinner. I usually look forward to it because even though it is a ‘business’ function, it allows me indulge in fashion girly-ness!

This year’s awards didn’t disappoint. From the first time the event was staged in 2002 (or was it 2003), it has gone from strength to strength. This year’s awards dinner is the best ever — it’s organised, stayed on schedule, the overall look, visuals and design were classy and high tech! The food (and booze!) was not bad either.

Here’s looking forward to next year’s awards! Hopefully Shannon’s Way will be able to join…or perhaps the year after?

I ventured on the road less travelled

On the first day of spring here in New Zealand (that’s 1st Sep for you Northern Hemisphereans), my business partner and I started operating out of our offices down town. There’s still a lot of kinks related to the fit out that needs to be worked out but all in all, it is habitable.

Now all we need is a few more new contracts to keep us happy :-)

So what do we do you ask? We’re a ‘Corporate Social Responsbility (CSR) consulting firm called ‘Shannon’s Way (NZ). Our parent company, Shannon’s Way Pty Ltd is based in Melbourne, Australia and owns 50% of the New Zealand while the other half of the NZ company is owned by my business partner, Chris and myself.

The Australian firm specialises on the ‘social marketing’ side of the business (ie creative and implementation) while we bring strengths in the research & strategy development side of things.

I never thought that as at this age in my life, I would already be a partner of a company such as this.

It’s quite daunting to be honest having office-related overheads to pay but it is also exciting knowing that you (well, me) are part of the team that will shape the destiny and future of the company.

Wish me luck!
